The day begins early with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Maccha Khola, the starting point of your trek. The journey takes you through the beautiful Trishuli River Valley, offering views of terraced fields, charming villages, and the majestic Ganesh Himal in the distance. As you travel along winding roads, you’ll get your first taste of rural Nepal. On arrival in Maccha Khola, a small village situated by the river, you will check into your luxury lodge and enjoy a delicious meal in the peaceful surroundings, ready for the trek ahead.
After breakfast, begin your trek through the lush forests and beautiful landscapes of the Manaslu region. Today’s trek takes you through a more remote section of the Manaslu region. As you leave Jagat, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, passing through dense forests, suspension bridges, and small villages. The journey offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the local people, many of whom belong to the Tamang and Sherpa communities. After about six hours, you’ll arrive in Deng, a village with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Your luxury lodge here offers a comfortable resting spot, where you can enjoy a hot meal and relax for the evening.

After the hike, return to Sama Gaun, where you can enjoy a gourmet meal at your lodge, taking in the spectacular mountain scenery.
Today’s trek takes you to Samdo, a remote village located near the Tibetan border. Another acclimatization day is planned to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Today, you will embark on a long day hike towards the Tibetan Border, reaching an altitude of approximately 5,000m. This hike offers incredible views of the Tibetan Plateau and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The trail passes through rocky terrain and offers a unique opportunity to experience the remote regions bordering Tibet. The Manaslu Trek is a circuit-style trek that takes you around Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters), one of the highest peaks in the world. The trek is less commercialized than other popular routes like the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, making it ideal for trekkers looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience. The trek passes through remote villages, Tibetan monasteries, lush forests, and rugged mountain terrain, with stunning views of Manaslu, Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Mt. Annapurna.
The trek is considered moderate to difficult and requires a good level of fitness, as it involves high-altitude trekking and some technical challenges. The highest point on the trek is the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, which requires acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. The journey is rich in cultural experiences, as you pass through traditional Tibetan Buddhist villages and interact with the local people.
The best time to trek the Manaslu Circuit is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) seasons. These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and pleasant temperatures, which are ideal for trekking at high altitudes. During these seasons, you can expect stunning views of the surrounding peaks, lush landscapes, and vibrant rhododendron flowers (in spring).
The winter months (December to February) can be very cold, particularly at high altitudes, and the Larkya La Pass may be closed due to snow. The summer and monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, which can make the trails slippery, increase the risk of landslides, and cause river crossings to be dangerous.
Yes, the Manaslu Trek requires several permits:
Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): The Manaslu region is a restricted area, so trekkers need to obtain a Manaslu RAP. This permit is issued by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu and is usually valid for a specific duration.
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): This permit is required for entry into the Manaslu Conservation Area and can be obtained in Kathmandu or in the town of Arughat.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): If your trek crosses into the Annapurna region towards the end, an ACAP is required.
You will need a licensed guide to trek the Manaslu Circuit, and most trekking agencies include the permit fees in their package prices. The permits are generally not available for individual trekkers (unless accompanied by a guide), and they must be arranged in advance.
The Manaslu Trek presents several challenges that make it suitable for experienced trekkers:
Altitude: The highest point on the trek is the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, so acclimatization is critical to avoid altitude sickness. The trek gradually increases in altitude, but proper acclimatization days are essential.
Difficult Terrain: The trek passes through a variety of terrains, including steep ascents, rocky trails, and river crossings. The sections around Larkya La Pass are particularly challenging due to the altitude and cold.
Limited Infrastructure: While there are teahouses along the route, the facilities are more basic compared to other trekking routes like the Everest or Annapurna circuits. Luxury is limited, and trekkers need to be prepared for rustic accommodations and simple meals.
Weather: The weather at high altitudes can be unpredictable, especially in the winter months when snowstorms can block access to the Larkya La Pass. Be prepared for cold conditions, especially at night.
Accommodation along the Manaslu Trek mainly consists of basic teahouses or lodges. While more rudimentary than the accommodations on other major trekking routes, these teahouses offer trekkers a place to rest, a simple meal, and a warm bed after a long day’s walk.
The facilities may include shared rooms, common dining areas, and basic amenities like blankets and hot showers (sometimes at an extra cost). While the teahouses are generally comfortable, they can be crowded, especially during the peak trekking seasons, so be prepared for rustic conditions and limited privacy.
If you are trekking with a luxury trekking agency, some routes may have upgraded accommodations, though these are still relatively basic compared to what you might find in more popular trekking regions like the Annapurna or Everest regions.
The Manaslu Trek is considered to be moderately difficult to challenging. It requires a good level of physical fitness and stamina as you will be trekking at high altitudes (over 5,000 meters) and crossing tough terrain. The route includes long daily walking hours, steep ascents, and descents, as well as the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters.
Trekking experience is necessary, and you should be comfortable walking for 6-8 hours a day on varied trails. A reasonable level of fitness and some previous high-altitude trekking experience will be beneficial, but even first-time trekkers with a good fitness level can complete the trek with proper training and acclimatization.
Packing for the Manaslu Trek requires careful planning, as you’ll be trekking in remote, high-altitude conditions. Here’s a list of essential gear:
Trekking Boots: Sturdy, comfortable boots with ankle support for uneven terrain.
Clothing: Layered clothing is essential, including thermal base layers, waterproof outer layers, down jacket, and hiking pants.
Sleeping Bag: A warm sleeping bag suitable for temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F) is essential for the cold nights at higher elevations.
Daypack: A small pack for carrying daily essentials like water, snacks, camera, and a first aid kit.
Trekking Poles: Helpful for stability on rocky or steep sections.
Water Purification: Water treatment tablets or a water purifier bottle to ensure access to safe drinking water.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The high-altitude sun can be intense, so protect your skin and eyes from UV rays.
Headlamp: For early starts and late arrivals in the evening.
Don’t forget to carry cash in local currency (Nepali Rupees), as ATM access is limited along the trek.
The Manaslu Trek is a restricted area, so it cannot be trekked independently without a licensed guide. As of now, the Nepal government requires trekkers to travel with a guide (and often a porter), and you cannot do the trek as a solo trekker. This regulation helps ensure the safety of trekkers and preserves the region's environment.
Most trekking agencies in Kathmandu offer guides and porters, and they also arrange the necessary permits for you. They can also provide valuable assistance in case of emergencies, help with route navigation, and offer insights into the local culture and environment.
The Manaslu Trek is perfect for trekkers looking for a challenging, off-the-beaten-path adventure in Nepal. With its dramatic mountain scenery, cultural richness, and the thrill of trekking through a relatively untouched region, the trek offers an unforgettable experience for those ready to take on the challenge. While it requires good physical preparation and a spirit of adventure, the rewards are plentiful—stunning landscapes, rich Tibetan culture, and the sense of accomplishment after crossing the Larkya La Pass. If you’re an experienced trekker seeking something unique, the Manaslu Circuit is a trek worth considering.
