The best time to visit Nepal and Bhutan is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months provide mild weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility of the Himalayan peaks. Here’s a breakdown of each season:
Spring (March to May): This is one of the best times to visit both Nepal and Bhutan. The weather is mild, and the valleys are lush with blooming flowers, especially rhododendrons in Nepal. In Bhutan, the valleys are green and alive with blooming flowers, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another great time, with stable weather and crystal-clear mountain views. The skies are usually clear, making it ideal for trekking and scenic flights, especially in the Everest and Annapurna regions of Nepal, as well as for viewing the Himalayan range in Bhutan.
Winter (December to February): While the weather can be cold, the winter months are less crowded, offering a peaceful experience. However, high-altitude treks in Nepal can be challenging due to snow, and in Bhutan, temperatures can drop significantly in higher elevations.
Monsoon (June to August): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, especially in Nepal’s trekking regions, which can lead to slippery trails and landslides. Bhutan also experiences some rain, but it is less severe than in Nepal. For both countries, the monsoon season is generally best avoided.
The Nepal and Bhutan Tour typically lasts between 10 to 14 days, depending on the itinerary. Most tours combine 7 to 10 days in Nepal with 4 to 5 days in Bhutan, offering enough time to explore key sites in both countries. A typical itinerary might include:
Kathmandu (2-4 days): Visit major cultural and spiritual sites like Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath.
Bhutan (5-8 days): Travel to Bhutan, visiting Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, including iconic sites like Tiger’s Nest.
For those with more time, extended itineraries may include visits to Bumthang or Punakha in Bhutan, or longer treks in Nepal such as the Annapurna Circuit or a trek to Langtang Valley.
Nepal: A visa is required for most foreign nationals to enter Nepal. You can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land border crossings. Visa fees are typically USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days. A visa extension is available if you wish to stay longer.
Bhutan: Bhutan operates a unique tourism policy, where most foreign visitors need to book their trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. The operator arranges the visa, which is processed after you’ve paid for your trip. The minimum daily package includes accommodation, meals, transportation, and a licensed guide. Visas are typically processed after confirming your travel arrangements. The tourism fee is generally USD 250 per person per day for peak seasons, with discounts during off-seasons.
Both Nepal and Bhutan offer a range of accommodations, from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels.
In Nepal: You’ll find a wide variety of accommodations, especially in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan. From basic guesthouses to luxury hotels and resorts, Nepal offers something for all types of travelers. In trekking regions, teahouses provide basic but comfortable stays.
